Intoxalock®
Intoxalock is an ignition interlock device, it is a small handheld breathalyzer installed in your vehicle to block ignition if alcohol level exceeds the norm.
How does it work?
Intoxalock prevents a driver from starting a vehicle if he/she is intoxicated. It also performs random tests while vehicle is running. The tests and retests are done by taking breath samples before and during the trip.
These continued tests are required by the state of Florida.
What is the Intoxalock Device For?
Ignition Interlock, including Intoxalock, is the most effective way to prevent repeat drunk driving offenses.
National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) publicly supports ignition interlock devices and pushes for their implementation for all drunk driving offenders.
When Do I Need to Install Intoxalock?
In most cases after a DUI violation, the ignition interlock device will be mandated through a court order, your Probation officer, or the DMV.
If required to install an ignition interlock device, you may be eligible to install it right away or you may need to sit out a required license suspension.
You can also install Intoxalock voluntarily for the following reasons:
- To prevent drunk driving of a teenager/young driver
- To prevent a first-time offense of a family member
- To prevent repeat DUI offenses
- To guarantee sobriety for drivers of a company vehicle
